A visually striking and easy-to-make Halloween appetizer featuring a black spider web design created with black food coloring and ranch dressing, surrounded by fresh crunchy vegetables and black olive spiders.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 cups creamy ranch dressing
  • 3–5 drops black gel food coloring
  • Carrots, cut into 3-inch sticks
  • Celery stalks, sliced into 1-inch pieces
  • Cauliflower florets, small and bite-sized
  • Broccoli florets, small and tight
  • Cherry tomatoes, whole (optional)
  • Black olives, sliced or whole (for spiders)
  • Chives, chopped (optional garnish)

Instructions

  1. Wash and thoroughly dry all vegetables. Cut carrots into 3-inch sticks, celery into 1-inch pieces, and broccoli/cauliflower into small florets. Pat dry to remove moisture.
  2. Pour 1 to 1.5 cups of ranch dressing into a small bowl. If the ranch is very thick, microwave for 10-15 seconds to make it slightly more fluid.
  3. Add 3-5 drops of black gel food coloring to the ranch and stir vigorously until the color is uniform and dark.
  4. Pour the blackened ranch onto the center of a large serving platter. Spread it into a rough circle with the back of a spoon, leaving a white border.
  5. Using a squeeze bottle or a Ziploc bag with the corner snipped, drizzle lines outward from the center like spokes of a wheel, then connect them with curved lines to create a web pattern.
  6. Place sliced black olives at the intersections of the web lines and whole olives at the ends of the spokes to resemble spiders.
  7. Arrange the vegetable sticks and florets along the web lines, tucking them slightly into the ranch.
  8. Garnish with chopped chives if desired. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before serving.

Notes

Ensure vegetables are completely dry before assembly to prevent wilting. If the ranch is too cold, it may clump; let it sit at room temperature for 10 minutes before drizzling. The tray is best assembled no more than 24 hours in advance to prevent dye bleeding.
