easy cranberry orange relish - featured image

A bright, zesty cranberry relish made with fresh oranges and ginger that cuts through rich holiday meals. This quick, no-cook-chill recipe is naturally gluten-free and vegan-friendly.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 ounces (340g) fresh cranberries
  • 2 large navel oranges (for zest and juice)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger root, finely minced
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons honey or maple syrup
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Wash oranges and zest them directly into a small bowl, avoiding the white pith. Cut oranges in half and juice them to yield about ½ cup of fresh juice. Set zest and juice aside.
  2. Peel the fresh ginger using a spoon and finely mince it until almost paste-like to ensure even distribution.
  3. In a medium saucepan, combine cranberries, orange juice, orange zest, minced ginger, honey (or maple syrup), and salt. Stir gently and let sit for 5 minutes.
  4. Place the saucepan over medium-low heat and stir frequently. Cook for 8-10 minutes until about half of the berries pop. Remove from heat immediately to avoid sliminess.
  5. Pour the mixture into a glass bowl or storage container. Let cool to room temperature, then cover tightly and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight to set.

Notes

Use fresh orange juice for best flavor; canned juice can taste flat. Do not overcook the cranberries or the relish will become slimy. The relish tastes better after chilling overnight as flavors meld. Can be frozen for up to three months.
