Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups peeled and sliced apples (about 45 medium apples, Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour blend)
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted (or coconut oil for dairy-free)
  • 3/4 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Peel, core, and slice about 6 cups of apples. Toss them in a large bowl with 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg, and 1 tablespoon lemon juice. Set aside.
  3. Spread the seasoned apples evenly in the bottom of a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  4. Pour 3/4 cup of caramel sauce evenly over the apples without stirring.
  5. In a separate bowl, mix 1 cup rolled oats, 1/2 cup all-purpose flour, 1/2 cup packed brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1 teaspoon cinnamon.
  6. Pour 1/2 cup melted unsalted butter into the oat mixture and stir until moistened and crumbly.
  7. Evenly sprinkle the oat mixture over the caramel-coated apples.
  8. Bake for 40-45 minutes until the topping is golden brown and crisp, and the apples are bubbling and tender.
  9. Let the cake rest for at least 10 minutes before serving.
  10. Optional: Serve with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

Use tart apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp for best flavor and texture. Melt butter but avoid overheating before mixing with oats and sugar. If topping browns too quickly, tent with foil halfway through baking. For dairy-free, substitute butter with coconut oil and use dairy-free caramel sauce. For gluten-free, use gluten-free flour and certified gluten-free oats. Optional additions include chopped nuts or spices like ginger or cardamom.
