Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (90g) rolled oats
  • ½ cup (120g) plain full-fat Greek yogurt (or dairy-free coconut yogurt for vegan option)
  • ½ cup (120ml) milk (almond, oat, or dairy milk)
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) maple syrup or honey
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • A pinch of salt
  • For the Cherry Compote:
  • 1 cup (150g) fresh or frozen pitted cherries
  • 1 tablespoon (15ml) maple syrup or honey
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) water
  • Optional: splash of cherry liqueur or a pinch of cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Prepare the cherry compote: Place cherries, maple syrup, lemon juice, and water into a small saucepan. Simmer on medium-low heat for 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally until cherries soften and compote thickens. Stir in cherry liqueur or cinnamon if using. Remove from heat and let cool.
  2. Mix the oats base: In a mixing bowl, combine rolled oats, Greek yogurt, milk, cocoa powder, maple syrup, vanilla extract, and salt. Stir until smooth and creamy.
  3. Assemble the jars: Spoon about one-third of the cherry compote into the bottom of each jar or container. Add the oat mixture on top, leaving room for compote to swirl through.
  4. Chill overnight: Cover jars and refrigerate for at least 6 hours or overnight to allow oats to soak and flavors to meld.
  5. Serve and enjoy: Stir oats gently to swirl in cherry compote or add extra compote on top. Optionally garnish with dark chocolate shavings, chopped nuts, or whipped cream.

Notes

Use rolled oats for best texture; quick oats may become mushy. Sweeten cherry compote gradually to balance tartness. Full-fat Greek yogurt makes oats creamier but lower-fat versions work. Cherry compote can be made ahead and stored up to a week in fridge or frozen up to 3 months. Stir in a teaspoon of water if compote thickens too much before layering.
