Crispy Wonton Chips: Best Buffalo Chicken Dip Recipe

Crispy Wonton Chips - featured image

A game-day appetizer featuring a rich, spicy buffalo chicken dip served with homemade crispy wonton chips that provide a structural crunch and prevent sogginess.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 package wonton wrappers (40–50 sheets)
  • Neutral oil (avocado or vegetable) for frying or brushing
  • Fine sea salt
  • Garlic powder (optional)
  • 2 blocks (8 oz each) cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup buffalo sauce (e.g., Frank’s RedHot)
  • 1/2 cup ranch dressing (full-fat)
  • 2 cups cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 2 cups cooked shredded chicken (rotisserie recommended)
  • 1/4 cup blue cheese dressing (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cut wonton wrappers into triangles by cutting each square in half diagonally, then halving the triangles again.
  2. Option A (Frying): Heat oil to 350°F (175°C). Fry wonton triangles in batches for 30-60 seconds per side until golden. Remove with a slotted spoon, drain on paper towels, and sprinkle with salt.
  3. Option B (Baking): Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Place triangles on a parchment-lined sheet, brush lightly with oil, sprinkle with salt, and bake for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway, until crisp.
  4. In a large bowl, beat softened cream cheese, ranch dressing, and buffalo sauce until smooth.
  5. Stir in shredded chicken and half of the cheddar cheese.
  6. Transfer mixture to a baking dish and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 20 minutes (or 25-30 minutes if made ahead).
  7. Remove from oven, sprinkle with remaining cheddar, and let sit for 2 minutes to melt.
  8. Serve hot dip with cooled wonton chips on the side.

Notes

Ensure cream cheese is fully softened to avoid lumps. Shred your own cheese to prevent anti-caking agents from affecting melt. Keep chips separate from the dip until serving to maintain crunch. If the dip is too thick, add a splash of chicken broth or milk.
