Crispy Mummy Pigs in a Blanket - featured image

A fun and easy Halloween appetizer featuring mini sausages wrapped in flaky puff pastry, baked until golden brown and served with a tangy mustard dip.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 sheet puff pastry (frozen, thawed but cold)
  • 8–10 mini sausages or cocktail franks
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • Flaky sea salt
  • Yellow mustard (for dipping)
  • Maple syrup (optional, for dipping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and place a rack in the center position.
  2. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  3. Thaw puff pastry until pliable but still cold.
  4. Cut the pastry sheets into 1-inch wide strips.
  5. Whisk the egg with water to create an egg wash.
  6. Wrap each mini sausage tightly with a pastry strip, leaving a small gap at the top for eyes.
  7. Press small pieces of dough or pretzel bits into the gaps to create eyes.
  8. Brush the tops with egg wash and sprinkle with flaky sea salt.
  9. Bake for 15-18 minutes until puffed and deep golden brown, rotating halfway through.
  10. Cool for 2-3 minutes before serving warm with mustard dip.

Notes

Keep the pastry cold to ensure flakiness. If the dough gets too warm, the butter will melt and the pastry will spread. You can freeze raw mummies for later baking, adding 2-3 minutes to the cook time.
