Creamy Salted Caramel Apple Crisp - featured image

A cozy, small-batch dessert designed for two people, featuring tender baked apples, a buttery oat crumble topping, and a rich, creamy salted caramel sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 medium apples (peeled, cored, and sliced into thin wedges)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup rolled oats (old-fashioned)
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar (packed)
  • 1 tablespoon cold butter (cut into small cubes)
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1/2 tablespoon butter
  • 1/4 teaspoon flaky sea salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a small bowl, toss sliced apples with lemon juice, cinnamon, and 1 tablespoon granulated sugar. Divide evenly between two 6-8 oz ramekins or a small baking dish and press down slightly.
  3. In another small bowl, combine oats, flour, 2 tablespoons brown sugar, and a pinch of salt. Cut in the cold butter using a fork until the mixture resembles coarse sand with pea-sized clumps. Sprinkle evenly over the apples and press lightly.
  4. Place ramekins on a baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes until the topping is golden brown and apples are tender.
  5. While baking, make the caramel: In a microwave-safe bowl, combine heavy cream, 1 tablespoon brown sugar, and 1/2 tablespoon butter. Microwave in 30-45 second intervals, stirring well between each, until smooth and sugar is dissolved. Stir in flaky sea salt.
  6. Remove crisps from oven and let cool for 2-3 minutes. Drizzle warm salted caramel generously over each crisp and serve immediately.

Notes

Ensure butter for the topping is cold to maintain texture. Do not skip the cooling step for the caramel as it thickens upon cooling. For dairy-free, swap cream for coconut cream and butter for vegan butter. For gluten-free, use certified GF oats and flour.
