A creamy, filling, and nutritious overnight oats recipe with chia seeds and flaxseed meal that takes just five minutes to prepare. This make-ahead breakfast is packed with over 12 grams of fiber and keeps you full until lunch.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (90g) rolled oats
  • 2 tablespoons (24g) chia seeds
  • 2 tablespoons (14g) flaxseed meal
  • 1 cup (240ml) milk of choice (e.g., unsweetened almond milk)
  • 12 tablespoons (15-30ml) maple syrup or honey
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • Optional toppings: fresh berries, sliced banana, chopped nuts, nut butter, coconut flakes, extra maple syrup

Instructions

  1. Combine the dry ingredients: In a mason jar or airtight container, add 1 cup rolled oats, 2 tablespoons chia seeds, and 2 tablespoons flaxseed meal. Stir to distribute evenly.
  2. Add the wet ingredients: Pour in 1 cup milk, 1-2 tablespoons maple syrup or honey, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Pour liquid along the side of the jar to prevent clumping.
  3. Stir thoroughly: Stir vigorously for about 30 seconds, scraping the bottom and corners to ensure no dry pockets remain. A small whisk works best.
  4. Shake it up: Put the lid on tightly and shake the jar for another 10-15 seconds until fully incorporated.
  5. Refrigerate for at least 6 hours: Place the jar in the refrigerator. Overnight (8-12 hours) is ideal for best texture.
  6. Check consistency in the morning: The mixture should be thick and spoonable. If too thick, stir in a tablespoon or two of milk.
  7. Add toppings and enjoy: Stir the oats, then top with fresh berries, sliced banana, nut butter, or chopped nuts. Serve cold or microwave for 30-45 seconds if desired.

Notes

For best texture, let oats rest at least 6 hours (overnight is ideal). If oats turn out runny, stir in an extra tablespoon of chia seeds and let rest for 30 minutes. Use room-temperature milk to speed up chia hydration. Batch prep up to 5 days in advance; texture improves on days 2-3. Do not freeze.
