A rich, velvety hot chocolate made in a slow cooker with just a few simple ingredients. This hands-off recipe yields a luxurious texture and is topped with cool peppermint whipped cream for a festive winter treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 4 cups milk (whole milk recommended, or oat milk for dairy-free)
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • 1 tablespoon sugar, honey, or maple syrup (optional, to taste)
  • Whipped cream for topping
  • Crushed candy canes or mint chips for garnish

Instructions

  1. Place chocolate chips in the bottom of a 4- to 6-quart slow cooker.
  2. Pour milk and heavy cream over the chocolate chips. Do not stir yet.
  3. Add sugar or sweetener if using.
  4. Give everything a gentle stir to wet the chocolate chips evenly.
  5. Cover and cook on LOW for 2 to 3 hours, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
  6. Once chocolate is melted, stir vigorously until the mixture is glossy and smooth.
  7. Turn off the heat and stir in the peppermint extract.
  8. Ladle into mugs and top with whipped cream and crushed candy canes.
  9. Serve immediately while hot.

Notes

Do not cook on HIGH heat as it can cause the dairy to separate or chocolate to seize. Add peppermint extract at the end to preserve flavor. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days; reheat gently on stovetop or microwave.
